Stephen Day
Taos Artist, Stephen Day loves to paint the landscape of the Southwest. Born in Sheridan, Wyoming, Stephen Day was raised in New Mexico and Colorado. With a BA degree from McMurry College in Abilene, Texas, he went on to receive a master’s Degree in theology, from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Stephen was a Methodist Church minister in Casper, Wyoming for three years after graduating and studied with Richard Schmid, David Leffel, John Encinias and Clyde Aspevig. It wasn’t until he became an artist that Day learned how to fully respond to strong connections between his previous avocation and that of an artist. “The painting process itself is like a prayer, a meditation. And, this is where God is,” Day said as he waved his hand at the scenery before him.
Stephen Day works in oils. He paints a variety of subjects but the landscape remains his first love. He says, “I paint almost exclusively from life trying to capture the feeling and the mood of the subject before me. Painting outdoors is the place where all the information a painting needs can be found. “Painting is learning to see and the only place you can truly do this is on location; out in nature.” This working philosophy forces me to paint quickly to get a spontaneous and fresh response, because everything around us (including ourselves) is in a constant state of change.” |
